Commentary

All of Me for 3 Violas and Violoncello

New York-born jazz composed by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931.
It became a big hit as soon as it was born, and was played by Louis Armstrong and many other virtuosos.
After that, songs were added, and it was arranged by various musicians and has been handed down to the present day.
When I listened to this song on CD, I was struck by the beauty of the music, the arrangement, and the performance.
Therefore, I asked my friend, composer Hiroyuki Oda, to arrange for violas which I'm fond of.
This sheet music was arranged for 3 violas and a cello.
I would like to be able to perform in a way that brings out the feeling of swinging in the original song.

Bass Bar playing All of Me

The name of the group performing this song, Bass Bar, is a stringed instrument that is stretched vertically on the back of the top board.
It's a stick, and it seems that it was given this name because it supports the stringed instrument from the back.
In the 1980s, 12 cellists, including my youngest brother, gathered under the name of Bass Bar.
At times, they began performing in a wide range of genres, adding other instruments such as vocals and bass.
They released the CD in 1991 from CBS/SONY under the title of Newyork Love Story.
Among them, Hirotsugu Miyashita arranged this music for 5 cellos, conbass and electric guitar
"ALL OF ME" songs:
"If you took a part of my heart, I want you to take my whole heart...
The lyric, which does not appear here, is about a couple walking in Central Park
"There must be some people who feel that way."

3 Nocturnes of Azarashvili

Vasya Azarashvili, born in 1936, is a famous Georgian composer.
The original Nocturne is thought to be for two violins and strings.
You can listen to various instrument conbinations on YouTube
I like the performance of two violins by Edmond Hovhannisyan and Ani Balyan.
In the spring of 2022, I asked composer Oda for arranging this beautiful song.
In addition to the two 2 Violins with piano version that are often performed there,
violin, viola and piano, and violin cello version are arranged.
I'm currently trying it out with my friends and discussing it.

Air on G string(Quartet Version)

The beautiful aria of Bach's Suite No. 3 is also very famous as the aria on the G string.
It is called by this name because it is played only with the G string of the violin.
This sheet music plays the melody with a single G string on the viola.
Therefore, it is accompanied by two violas and a supporting cello.
This music sheet was created using the music input software "WinScoreJp",
which I have been working on for the past few years.
Because the software is still in under construction, there are still many problems,
but I introduced it in conjunction with the construction of this site.

No. 9 from 18 Chorales, arranged for string quartet (Bach)

Bach composed a chorale for organ consisting of 18 pieces during his Weimar period.
Of these, number 9 is particularly beautiful and has been arranged for many instruments.
On YouTube, you can listen to Horowitz's romantic performance of Busoni's piano arrangement

Composer Hiroyuki Oda, who heard the orchestral version by NHK Symphony Orchestra, arranged it for string quartet.
We are now able to download it from this site.

3 Duos for Cl and Bassoon(Beethoven WoO.27)

At the APA viola meeting, most of the participants show off their one-year achievements in improving their playing skills
On the other hand, I would like to introduce the charm of Viola as an chamber music instrument.
Among them, the combination of viola and bassoon DUO is very rare, so
So I have decided to arrange from the works of great composers.
I chose the Cl and Fg duet that Beethoven composed around the age of 22, and arranged Cl for Viola.
This song has been published as a DUO of Vn and Vc in the Peters version (7427) without mentioning the original.
At the viola meeting, I asked the "Yoyogi no Mori" orchestra's bassoon player to play with.

Viola (instead of Violin) part of Brahms Horn Trio Op.40

Brahms' horn trio is a valuable chamber music masterpiece for horn players.
When I was in my second year of high school, I performed this music with my friend (Vn) and
younger brother(Hr) at the school festival.
My father recommended me to play this music which is unfamiler for our age.
This piece is usually played by violin, horn and piano.
In the Peters version, viola part insted of horn part is attached.
On the other hand, this score is arranged to play the viola instead of violin part
So, It can be played fo two violas and piano, or for viola, horn and piano.
I performed with horn player Mr. Nishida at the APA party of violists.

Silent Woods for 5-Violas or 4-Violas and Cello(Dvorak)

The original song is Dvorak's four-handed piece "From Bohemian Woods Op68-5" composed in 1893.
The composer himself arranged it for Vc and Pf DUO, and it was played at the farewell concert
for his departure to the United States in 1892.
After that, it was arranged by the composer himself for Vc and Orchestra and named "Silent Wood".
On March 31, 2015, a concert by the Tokyo Cello Ensemble was held at Kioi Hall.
I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the music arranged for cello quintet and the performance.
I immediately decied to arrnge this for viola quintet(5 Violas).
Cello has a wide rage of music scale, I struggled to fit it into the Viola's range.
In 2016, I played a solo part at the APA party of Viola.
Furthermore, in the case of Va only, all sounds are concentrated in the midrange,
so, the cello part was added insted of the 5th Va to support the base.
Origiinal score was published by Simrock in 1997 as the cello quintet version.
This was created by changing the range that can be played without difficulty on the viola.
A.Dvorak, op.68/5 Bearbertung und Einrichtung: Lothar Niefind und Gunter Ribke.

Nimrod from 9th variation of Enigma Op.38(Elgar)

In 1889, at the age of 42, Sir Edward William Elgar (1857-1934) composed
an orchestral piece named Variations on an Original Theme.
Given the subtitle Enigma for its publication, the piece made his reputation
as a composer world-wide.
The piece consists of a theme and 14 variations.
Each piece is named after a friend of the composer, of these
the 9th variation named Nimrod is often performed alone because of its beauty.
This music is arranged for string quartet by composer Hiroyuki Oda.
Arrangement of Nimrod for string quartet was not found in the IMLSP,
a global music dowload site.

2 set of Duos for Vn/Va and Va/Vc(Gliere)

At the APA Viola meeting, most of the players have performed duos with viola and piano.
I have always tried to appear in DUOs, TRIOs, etc. with various instruments.
This DUO was introduced by Yuki Hyakutake(Violist) as a DUO with viola and bass.
I participated in the event as a DUO with bass, but when I knew that the original songs were Vn and Vc.
I thought that this combination would not be my turn, so I arranged the songs for Vn and Va and Va and Vc.
At the 2018 APA Viola meeting, I again performed this Vn and Va DUO.
It was a rare case that the same song was played twice with different instrumentation (DUO with Cb).

Entertainer(Scott Joplin)

This ragtime masterpiece was arranged for the 1992 annual convention of Amatuer Players Association(APA).
The arranger was Mr. Kazuo Suzuki, who was enrolled in the Shinsei Symphony Orchestra at the time.
The ensemble is for string ensemble including a double bass.
It is made with strings aiming for the sound of a big band.
Alla Marcia's place is from the ragtime style to a swing style
Don't rush and play with 4 beats.
During the performance at APA, the guidance was given by a professional violin instructor.

Sonata for Vn and Va(from Leclair Op.12 No.4)

The APA (Amateur Players Association) holds concerts for different instruments.
One of them is for the Viola group, and I have participated in the first 20 concerts since 1998 without absence.
During that time, I have tried my best to perform in ensembles with instruments other than the piano.
I participated in the 2nd concert as a duo of two violas. The co-star was Mrs. M.S., who participated for the first time.
The piece at the time was the first and third movement of No. 4 from the Sonata for 6 Violas,
Op. 12 by Jean-Marie Leclair (1697 - 1764).
The score was first published in two volumes under the title VIOLA BIBLIO-THEK by SCHOTT,
and Nos. 4, 5, and 6 are included in the second volume.
I selected beautiful and relatively easy-to-play piece from among these pieces.
The sheet music presented heree is a rewritten version of this song as a DUO for Violin and Viola.
I asked the composer, Mr. Oda, to arrange and write the score.
During the revision, I consulted with Mr. S.S., a violinist of APA, and received a lot of advice.

Viola (alternate for cello)part of Mendelssohn Piano Trio No.1 Op.49

I received a handwritten arrangement for the first movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Trio
from Ms. F.F., who sometimes teaches chamber ensemble to me.
At that time I had enjoyed playing this music with many person,
I thought I would try to play with the viola instead of the violoncello.
I checked IMLSP, facmous download site of sheet music, but there was no transcription for viola.
Then I decided to create the beautiful second movement for viola using WinWcore,
a software which I created.
This movement seems to have many parts where the viola can play origiinal cello's part without any arranement.
The 1st, 3rd, and 4th movements were arranged by the composer Mr.H.O. using Sibelius software.
In producing the score, I referred to the Peters version and matched the rehearsal symbols.
Measure numbers are given for convenience in ensembles with people who use the Henle version.

Sonata for Fg and Vc(Mozart K.292)

In 1988, before Windows came out, in the Nikkei Byte magazine,
professor Leland Smith, a musicologist at Stanford University, created music notation software on a PC
I was interested in seeing the article, and I immediately imported SCORE software from the United States.
Out of all the music score creation software available at the time, SCORE was by far the best.
For evaluation in music magazines, they were compared with the same sheet music
and were evaluated for their overwhelming splendor.
Naniwa Musical Instruments, a music trading company that existed in Japan at the time,
started selling SCORE and creating sheet music from handwriting.
When Dr. Smith came to Japan for the promotion of SCORE and gave a lecture, I accompanied him and gave a demonstration at music colleges and other places.
Viola part of This DUO is arranged from Vc part.
Several years ago, I played this at the APA viola meeting.

5 Divertiments (Mozart K.439b)

This piece was composed by Mozart for three basset horns
This is an arrangement of five divertiments for stringed instruments.
The basset horn is not a horn companion, but a clarinet companion appeared around 1770.
Mozart was very fond of this low-pitched instrument,
it is used in his masterpieces such as 13-pipe serenade, "The Magic Flute" and "Requiem".
The score was published for two clarinet and bassoon editions in the early 19th century,
After that, various formation such as string trio or piano solo are publised.
This score is faithful to the original and has been transposed to D major suitable for stringed instruments.
The sheet music are arranged for 2 violins and a viola, or 2 violins and a cello
This is one of In 2020, when concerts are rarely held due to the corona crisis, online
I had the opportunity to listen to a performance of this song by four pro orchestra viola players.
It was a very beautiful performance, and I thought it would be suitable for viola, so I immediately started arranging it.
This piece is composed with a 4-part chorus accompanied by 4-part string instruments.
As for the arrangement policy, the part with the chorus is the chorus voice,
For the prelude and postlude parts, the vocal parts of stringed instruments are placed in the range of the Viola.
In addition, the 4th viola, which plays the bass, has a cello sheet music that allows you to use the same range as the original song.
This score was created using the music input software WinScoreJp, which I have been working on for the past few years.
nostalgic songs my father used to listen to on LPs when I was in high school.br> (thanks to my father).

Overture of "Cosi Fan Tutte"(K.588)

In the 19th century, with the development of the piano, it became popular to enjoy orchestral songs by piano duet.
When I was on a business trip to London, I found a sheet music shop "Travis and Emery".
I found and bought a thick used sheet music of Cosi Duet for 22.5 pound.
The binding was stamped with MISS HOPE, and I feel it not so expensive.
At that time, the sheet music paper was thick, and the binding is beautifully ordermade.
Since I was a student, I was involved in chamber music, but in middle age,
I deeply impressed by Mozart's religious music.
At that time, video disc became very popular.
I was fascinated Cosi by the video disc produced by Jean-Pierrer Ponnelle
After that I enjoyed many operas, which can be said to be the extreme of entertainment,
and which is the opposite of stoic chamber music.
So, I wanted to reprint Cosi's score, I used computer to engrave the sheet music.
This sheet music was published by Tokyo Ongaku Shoin and sold for a list price of 1,000 yen.
Unfortunately, the publisher has gone bankrupt, so I decided to introduce it here.

Ave Verum Corpus(Mozart K.618)

In 2020, when concerts are rarely held due to the corona crisis,
I had a chance to listen to a online performance of this music by 4 orchestra viola players.
Since it was a very beautiful performance, I thought it would be suitable for viola,
so I immediately started arranging it.
This piece is composed as a 4-part chorus accompanied by 4-part strings.
As for the arrangement, 4 vocal parts are transcibed to meet the pralyable range of viola,
and the introduction and finisheing parts are almost same as the original composition.
In addition, a cello part is prepared insted of the 4th viola which supports the bass part.
The music sheet is created using the music input software "WinScoreJp" which I have been working on.

Arrangement of strings part of the trout for piano (Schubert)

"Trout" is said to be one of the most popular pieces in classical chamber music.
It's also popular in APA, and of course I've played viola part many times.
In 2020, I started practicing piano part and felt that it would be good
if I could practice with two pianos like for the piano concerto.
I asked Mr. Hiroyuki Oda, a composer, to arrange 4 strings parts for piano.
Adding the bar number, rehearsal marks have been added in the same place of Peters edition.

Arrengement of 1st Cello part for Viola(Schubert)

This string quintet was composed just before Schubert's death and is highly regarded as his best chamber music work.
This song uses two cellos instead of the usual two violas, pursuing a symphonic sound.
This first cello uses a lot of high notes, and there are many difficulties in playing a gorgeous melody in DUO with other parts.
The string quartet (RSQ) to which I belong has a chance to play with Japanese top young cellist.
For this reason, RSQ decided to practice asking somebody for substitution.
I think if it would be possible to play this part on Viola.
Since there are many parts where the Cello is played in high notes, it may be possible to play most parts with the actual pitch of the Viola.
Completed arrangement is to be uploaded as the style of the sheet music on this site.
In creating the arrangement, I referred to Henle's version and asked composer Hiroyuki Oda to do it.
